Bert van der Vaart
Board Advisor
Bert brings over 35 years in emerging-market private investment and SME finance. He is Co-founder and Chief Investment Officer of SEAF, the global investment firm he co-founded in 1989 that has deployed growth capital and operational support to small and medium enterprises across more than 30 developing markets — including Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, China, Eastern Europe and Latin America. He previously served as CEO and President of SEAF, and as Executive Chairman of its Board of Directors. From 2010 to 2012 he directed the initial phase of SEAF's India Agribusiness Fund from New Delhi. Earlier in his career he was a Partner with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, Frankfurt and Brussels, specialising in corporate and financial transactions, and a management consultant with Bain & Company in London and Munich. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he also studied finance at Yale School of Management, an M.Phil in Economics and B.A. in Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina, where he was a Morehead Scholar.
At AGXL, Bert contributes the rarest combination of qualifications on the board — direct operational track record in agricultural fund management in India, SME finance experience in Bangladesh, and four decades of designing and deploying capital into emerging-market enterprises that traditional bureau-based credit cannot reach. His counsel directly informs how AGXL positions itself across the global DFI and emerging-market credit ecosystem.
